Kinja'd!!!

That’s how many miles my fleet of vans is scheduled to operate tomorrow, a relatively light day. One day - over 21K miles. And people asked why I didn’t want any Promasters in the fleet...

how many vans? (i feel like this would be an important detail)

(also.... entirely off topic.... but any idea how you’d get a black comment demoted to show waaay down yonder below the grays?... i think dismissing others might do the trick.. but as i havent done that im starting to think the kinja powers that be.. or possibly torch himself didnt like me comment:P)

Just one :P

Kidding - 159 routes, and maybe 20% using the same van on two routes throughout the day.

no idea on the comment questions.

My promaster is snuggled in tight in the dealerships repair bay. Stopped by today to grab some stuff from it. Put a 1000 miles on the rental this friday-sunday. Going to speak to my corps fleet manager this week. See if I can ditch the thing and let it finally go to auction. I’ve been given 2 new vans but they don’t actually make it to me. Always passed off in the pipe line.

Chevy C5500s and a bunch of Freightliners. Van is perhaps stretching the term as these are more accurately described as small buses.

I don’t know what you guys and gals do with vehicles in the states.

The Ram Promaster has a bad name for reliability and the VW Golf doesn’t get a really great name but the Golf is a solid reliable car this side of the pond and Ram Promaster (aka Citroen Relay aka Peugeot Boxer aka Fiat Ducato) don’t have a great name but not bad.

We’ve had them as ambulances for years.

and these things see some miles and operate in large areas at speed.

They replaced the solid Fiat/Peugeot drivetrain with some kind of Chrysler engine and a Chrysler automatic transmission. That seems to be the main issue.

The Golf has been an unreliable hunk of shit here too, at least in the mk5 and 6 generations. TSI, DSG, certain TDIs, you name it. It’s said to be a lot better now with the mk7. Most VWs in the US are built in Mexico, which might a cause of difference between our markets too.

I’ve never heard anything dramatic about the Golfs other than the old autos were awful but as the vast majority were manual at the time it really wasn’t a big deal. I recall something about the 2.0TDi a while back but generally the Golfs Mk4/5/6 are pretty much always seen as golden.

Mk4s, sure. They’re bullet proof, except for the window mechanism. The mk5 with a 1.9 TDI or a NA gasoline engine and obviously a manual, okay. But haven’t you heard about the many, many and very expensive issues with the TSIs?

I heard there was something with the Golf TSi’s and that Skoda didn’t have as many issues with the same engine for whatever reason but no one ever elaborated on it on the Skoda forum and I was as interested at the time to ask why.

The automatic on the Mk5 wasn’t as responsive apparently and one or two said it dropped a gear randomly.

I have friends with Mk5 Golf TSi’s, a couple with SEATs and Skoda of the same period with the 1.2 and 1.4 TSi units and none have had any issues at all. Our Superb Mk2 1.4TSi was faultless, went straight to the Mk3 1.4TSi ACT.

I could be wrong, but I think the Promasters are built in Mexico, too.

I think they’re actually built in Turkey or something.
